On the 31st, commuters wearing masks are waiting for the signal at an intersection in the central business district of Beijing, the capital of China. China's university entrance examination, the "Gaokao" (高考), has recorded the highest number of applicants ever, according to a report by the state-run Xinhua News Agency on the 31st.
According to the report, 11.93 million candidates from across China have registered for this year's exam, which will be held on June 7-8. This is about 1.15 million more than last year's 10.78 million registrants. There are 330,000 exam venues and 1.02 million proctors and staff members involved.
China postponed the Gaokao by one month in 2020, the first year of the COVID-19 outbreak, but held the exam as usual last year. This year, all regions except Shanghai are scheduled to hold the exam on June 7-8.
Shanghai, facing a surge in infections and ongoing city lockdowns, postponed the Gaokao by one month to July 7-8.
