[Asia Economy Reporter Minji Lee] It has been revealed that the cash dividends paid by companies with December fiscal year-end decreased compared to the previous year.


According to the Korea Securities Depository on the 31st, the total dividends paid by companies with December fiscal year-end last year amounted to 30.563 trillion KRW, down 12.1% from the previous year. The number of companies that paid cash dividends increased by 62 to 1,155 compared to the previous year.


By market, 568 companies in the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) market paid dividends totaling 28.3733 trillion KRW, a 14.1% decrease from the previous year. In the KOSDAQ market, 587 companies paid dividends, totaling 2.1897 trillion KRW, an increase of 24.8% compared to the previous year.


In the KOSPI market, although the stock index rose by 3.6%, dividends actually declined. The KOSDAQ market showed a dividend increase rate (24.8%) higher than the stock index growth rate (6.8%).


By industry, holding companies paid 4.2681 trillion KRW in dividends, accounting for 14% of the total dividend payments. This was followed by semiconductor manufacturing with 4.2428 trillion KRW (13.9%), automotive engine and automobile manufacturing with 2.244 trillion KRW (7.3%), and securities brokerage with 1.3117 trillion KRW (4.3%).

In the KOSPI market, the top 10 companies in shareholder dividends paid a total of 10.2599 trillion KRW, accounting for nearly 36.2% of the total dividends in the market. In the KOSDAQ market, the top 10 companies paid 385.3 billion KRW, which was 17.6% of the total. By stock, Samsung Electronics paid the highest dividends to shareholders in the KOSPI market, totaling 2.453 trillion KRW. In the KOSDAQ market, LX Semicon paid 87.8 billion KRW in dividends.


By investor type, dividends to domestic individual investors increased by 979.3 billion KRW to 8.919 trillion KRW. Among domestic individual shareholders, those in their 40s to 60s received 74.3% of the total dividends paid to domestic individuals. Shareholders in their 50s received the largest share at 2.8546 trillion KRW (32%), followed by those in their 60s with 2.1082 trillion KRW (23.6%) and those in their 40s with 1.671 trillion KRW (18.7%).


Domestic corporations received 11.7041 trillion KRW, and foreigners received 9.9399 trillion KRW, decreasing by 1.004 trillion KRW and 4.195 trillion KRW respectively compared to the previous year. The number of companies paying dividends to foreign shareholders increased by 64 to 1,154. The total dividends paid to foreign shareholders decreased by 4.195 trillion KRW (29.7%) to 9.9399 trillion KRW. In the KOSPI market, 567 companies paid 9.6606 trillion KRW, and in the KOSDAQ market, 587 companies paid 279.3 billion KRW in dividends.

The company that paid the largest amount to foreign shareholders was Samsung Electronics, which paid 1.311 trillion KRW in dividends. In the KOSPI market, 54% (5.187 trillion KRW) of dividends paid to foreign shareholders were concentrated among the top 10 companies. In the KOSDAQ market, the top 10 companies paid 116 billion KRW in dividends, accounting for nearly 41.5% of the total.
