No Rain and Continued High Temperatures, "Hold Water"... Cheongsong-gun Activates Emergency System for Drought Preparedness During Farming Season

Emergency Reserve Fund of 300 Million Won Injected, Full Effort to Secure Water Supply

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kim Gwiyeol] Cheongsong-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, has entered an emergency system to prepare for drought during the farming season.

Cheongsong-gun recently experienced water shortages in field crops due to insufficient rainfall, and with high temperatures expected to continue until mid-August, severe drought damage is anticipated. Therefore, an emergency budget of 300 million KRW has been urgently allocated to prepare for a prolonged drought.

So far this year, the rainfall has been 90.3 mm, which is only 39% of the average 230.8 mm, putting the fields on alert. Drought damage is expected for field crops such as apples and peppers due to wilting.

Cheongsong-gun is making efforts to minimize drought damage by releasing water from rivers such as Seongdeok Dam, Hwajangji, Sachonji, and Cheoncheonji, and operating the intake facilities of Yeongcheon Dam's water tunnel shafts 1 and 2.

First, to resolve complaints from drought-affected areas, emergency funds will be urgently allocated for river excavation, installation of temporary pumping facilities, creation of doombeong (small ponds), and emergency repairs of field infrastructure through urgent demand surveys in towns and townships.

A Cheongsong-gun official stated, “We are urgently injecting emergency funds to minimize drought damage,” and added, “We will swiftly prepare and implement follow-up measures to cope with the prolonged drought.”
