Director Ruben ?stlund Wins Second Palme d'Or
[Cannes (France) = Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] Director Ruben ?stlund's "Triangle of Sadness" won the Palme d'Or, the highest award at the 75th Cannes Film Festival. Director Park Chan-wook won Best Director for "Decision to Leave," and actor Song Kang-ho took home Best Actor for "Broker" (directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda).
Swedish director Ruben ?stlund previously won the Palme d'Or in 2017 for "The Square," and has now been honored again after five years. On stage, ?stlund said, "We want to talk together after the movie ends. That is why we watch movies together."
The film depicts the story of people stranded on a deserted island after a luxury cruise ship runs aground, as they seek survival and the existing social hierarchy is completely reversed. Actors Woody Harrelson and Harris Dickinson star in the film.
The Grand Prix was awarded to French director Claire Denis's "Stars at Noon" and Belgian director Lukas Dhont's "Close." Dhont, who won the Cam?ra d'Or at the 71st festival in 2018, has emerged as a filmmaker to watch at Cannes after receiving the Grand Prix this year.
Belgian director Felix Van Groeningen's "The Eight Mountains" and Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski's "EO" received the Jury Prize.
The Best Screenplay award went to Swedish director Tarik Saleh for "Boy from Heaven." The Best Actress award was given to Iranian actress Zahra Amir Ebrahimi for Ali Abbasi's "Holy Spider," while Korean actor Song Kang-ho won Best Actor for "Broker." Both Best Actor and Best Actress awards were claimed by Asian actors, and Asian filmmakers stood out with Chinese director Ji Anin Chen winning the Short Film Palme d'Or.
The Dardenne brothers, who have a special trust from Cannes after winning the Palme d'Or in 1999 for "Rosetta" and in 2006 for "The Child," received the 75th Anniversary Special Award for "Tori and Lokita."
