[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] The mother of the gunman involved in a shooting incident at an elementary school in the United States has apologized to the victims and their families.
On the 27th (local time), CNN aired an interview with Adriana Martinez, the mother of Salvador Ramos, who opened fire at an elementary school in Texas on the 24th, killing 19 students and 2 teachers.
In the interview conducted in Spanish, Martinez said, "I am shocked by my son's actions. I have no words," but also expressed, "I hope the innocent children who died in this incident can forgive me."
She stated that there must have been reasons behind her son's crime. Martinez claimed that her son was usually very quiet and kept to himself, saying, "My son did not bother anyone. He did not do anything to anyone." She appealed not to judge her son harshly.
In an interview with ABC News, she said, "If my son had been truly angry, he would have become aggressive," and added that she was completely unaware of her son's purchase of weapons.
Previously, a classmate testified that Ramos had shown antisocial and violent tendencies both at school and online.
According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Yareli Vasquez, who attended the same high school as Ramos, said that Ramos had difficulty accepting rejection from others and took it as a personal attack. She also mentioned that if someone said something that unsettled Ramos, he would become aggressive.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that the gunman Ramos was shot and killed by law enforcement officers at the scene.
