[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-won] On the 27th, the number of new COVID-19 cases in South Korea recorded the lowest figure in 17 weeks on a Friday basis, falling into the 10,000 range.


The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight on that day, 16,584 new COVID-19 cases were added, bringing the total cumulative cases to 18,053,287.


This is the first time since January 28 (16,090 cases) that the daily new cases on a Friday have dropped to the 10,000 range. The number of new cases every Friday this month has been decreasing since the 13th (32,441 cases), when cases increased due to the holiday effect.


The number of critically ill patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 was 207, down by 36 from the previous day (243).


The nationwide critical care bed occupancy rate is 13.9%, with 12.1% in the metropolitan area and 18.9% in non-metropolitan areas. The critical care bed occupancy rate in non-metropolitan areas decreased to the 10% range for the first time in 27 days since it dropped to the 20% range on the 30th of last month.


The number of new deaths, counted daily until midnight, has been gradually increasing since the 23rd. The newly reported deaths on this day were 40, compared to 19 on the 24th, 23 on the 25th, and 34 on the 26th. The cumulative death toll is 24,103, with a fatality rate of 0.13%.


With an additional 7,797 patients under home treatment the previous day, the total number of patients currently receiving home treatment is 128,476. Among them, 7,797 are in the intensive management group receiving health care from medical institutions.


The fourth dose vaccination rate for those aged 60 and over is 27.9%, and the first dose vaccination rate for children aged 5 to 11 is 1.4%.
