Gosin University Hospital Achieves Grade 1 in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Adequacy Evaluation

Gosin University Hospital Achieves Grade 1 in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Adequacy Evaluation Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kosin University Hospital.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] Kosin University Gospel Hospital has received the highest grade, Grade 1, in the "2nd Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Adequacy Evaluation" announced by the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service.

The 2nd NICU evaluation was conducted to improve the quality centered on patient safety through enhancements in the medical environment and prevention of healthcare-associated infections.

The evaluation targeted 84 tertiary general hospitals and general hospitals where NICU inpatient care occurred.

The assessment was based on NICU admissions and discharges from October 2020 to March 2021.

The evaluation areas consisted of three categories: the "structure domain," which assesses the availability of specialized personnel, equipment, and facilities in the NICU; the "process domain," which evaluates the appropriateness of medical procedures; and the "outcome domain," which measures the re-admission rate within 48 hours.

Kosin University Hospital achieved perfect scores in eight categories related to the "process domain," including the availability rate of specialized equipment and facilities, infection control protocol availability, severity assessment, and neonatal resuscitation training completion rate, earning a total score of 92.36 points, higher than the national average.

Neonatal intensive care refers to NICUs that provide focused treatment for high-risk newborns such as premature infants weighing less than 2.5 kg and those with congenital diseases like heart defects.

With the increase in elderly pregnancies and multiple births, the birth rate of premature and low birth weight infants is rising, leading to growing demand; however, operation requires advanced equipment and specialized personnel.

Kosin University Hospital was designated as a regional center for neonatal intensive care by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2015 and has been enhancing its capacity to provide focused treatment for high-risk newborns with prematurity and congenital diseases such as heart defects.
