Autonomous Delivery Robot 'Newbee' Providing a Unique Sight by Delivering Water and Beverages at Phoenix GC
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] SK Telecom announced on the 26th that it applied artificial intelligence (AI)-based media and robot technology to the 'SK Telecom Open 2022' men's golf tournament held at Pinx GC in Jeju on the 2nd of next month.
Marking its 25th edition this year, the SK Telecom Open is a major representative golf tournament in Korea.
SKT plans to provide abundant information to viewers watching the TV broadcast by applying the Plus Bar service on SK Broadband's B tv in cooperation with the tournament's main broadcasters JTBC Golf and KPGA (Korea Professional Golfers' Association).
The Plus Bar is a real-time linked interactive data service that allows viewers to use the remote control to check various desired information and data while watching the broadcast screen. This is the first time such a service has been applied to sports live broadcasts in Korea.
The 4.8 million households subscribed to B tv can watch the tournament on the JTBC Golf channel and immediately check additional information on their TVs that cannot be seen in the broadcast, such as 'player information, real-time rankings, and group formation status.'
Additionally, by utilizing SKT's self-developed AI highlight editing technology, viewers can watch 'player-specific highlight' videos featuring the plays of their favorite players.
SKT plans to apply the Plus Bar service to major domestic golf tournament broadcasts in the second half of the year and expand it to various sports disciplines in the future, leading a new broadcasting trend that satisfies fans' enjoyment and viewing experience.
Furthermore, at Pinx GC in Jeju, where the SK Telecom Open 2022 is held, an autonomous delivery robot will appear to provide a unique spectacle and convenience to on-site galleries.
On the 24th, SKT signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Newility, an autonomous delivery robot platform company, to jointly develop and commercialize autonomous robot delivery services. As the first result of this collaboration, SKT plans to apply its Metatron Grandview technology to Newility's autonomous delivery robot 'NewBee' and deploy it at Pinx GC. Metatron Grandview is a technology that collects and analyzes various data through sensors attached to robots (equipment) to predict the current status and maintenance timing in real time, thereby helping efficient equipment operation.
During the tournament, NewBee will autonomously navigate around Pinx GC and, when recognizing galleries and players approaching, will provide water and beverages loaded on its body.
Kim Hee-seop, SKT Communications Manager, said, "The SK Telecom Open, celebrating its 25th edition this year, will offer new spectacles and enjoyment to golf fans through SKT's AI services," adding, "We will continue to create various synergies by combining ICT and sports to contribute to industry revitalization."
