[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] On the 25th, Han Dong-hoon, Minister of Justice, ordered the preparation of measures to improve the treatment of correctional officers, including their salaries and working conditions, at a Ministry of Justice executive meeting.
At the meeting, Minister Han stated, "Chronic manpower shortages, inadequate treatment, and aging facilities in correctional sites are causing a decline in the quality of correctional services to the public and violations of inmates' human rights," and emphasized, "As mentioned in my inaugural speech, we must make a groundbreaking improvement this time to the previously overlooked poor human and material conditions of correctional work."
He then instructed the Director of the Correctional Headquarters, "Correctional officers, who make up about half of the Ministry of Justice staff, especially those working on-site, must work with pride to provide high-quality correctional services," and ordered, "Carefully review ways to drastically improve all aspects of treatment, including personnel, salaries, and working conditions," while requesting active support from related departments.
