Finally, the Urban Eyesore Disappears... Jinju City to Build a 'Multipurpose Child and Welfare Center' on the Site of the Former Yeongnam Department Store Demolition Perspective view of the multipurpose child and welfare center.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Jinju City, Gyeongnam, has completed the demolition of the old Yeongnam Department Store, which had been left as an eyesore in the city center for the past 30 years, and is promoting the construction of the ‘Jinju City Multipurpose Child and Welfare Center’.

The old Yeongnam Department Store located in Insadong opened as a department store in 1991 but ceased operations in 1992 due to poor management and had been left as an eyesore in the city center for 30 years.

In January 2019, a fire caused by an electrical short circuit occurred, turning it into a dangerous building and negatively affecting the nearby commercial district.

Despite these problems, the complex interests of over 120 owners made it impossible to renovate privately, leaving it abandoned.

The troublesome issue of handling the old Yeongnam Department Store reached a major turning point in 2020 with Jinju City’s plan to build the ‘Jinju City Multipurpose Child and Welfare Center’.

In April 2021, the city applied for and was selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s urban regeneration project, securing 6 billion KRW in national and provincial funds to purchase and demolish the building.

Demolition began at the end of last year, and the demolition of the five-story aboveground structure was completed in February this year. The ‘Jinju City Multipurpose Child and Welfare Center’ will be built on the site where the old Yeongnam Department Store was demolished.

The ‘Jinju City Multipurpose Child and Welfare Center’ will be constructed with a total project cost of 24.9 billion KRW, consisting of two basement floors and five aboveground floors, with a total area of 7,078 square meters.

Main facilities will include a play experience room for infants and toddlers, a children’s health dream garden, a toy bank, a small library, and other child welfare facilities, as well as the Seongbuk-dong Administrative Welfare Center and an 80-space public parking lot.

To promote the construction project of the multipurpose child and welfare center, the city completed compensation for the building and land in October last year, selected the winning design through an architectural design competition in November, and is currently conducting detailed design work.

The detailed design is planned to be completed by October this year, and after completing the necessary administrative procedures, construction will begin by the end of this year with the goal of completion in 2023.
