[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeong Seonghong, candidate for Superintendent of Education of Gwangju Metropolitan City, has expressed his refusal to the three-way unification proposed by candidate Kang Dongwan.
On the 25th, candidate Jeong issued a statement saying, "I reject unification that is anti-educational and only focuses on the outcome."
He stated, "This unification proposal insists that the result is more important than the process, which is 'anti-educational.' Suggesting unification to prevent the emergence of an 'immoral superintendent' or a 'conservative superintendent' without any sharing or proposal regarding the value, philosophy, and policies of education is merely election engineering. The superintendent election should be different from general elections."
He continued, "I am confident that the citizens of Gwangju, who have nominated me as the unified candidate for democratic progressive superintendents along with civic groups, will never tolerate the reality of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration's education policies attempting to revert to conservatism being enforced in Gwangju. Please carefully examine who the candidates with plagiarism allegations are, who the candidates with moral issues due to all kinds of unfair and illicit methods are, and who the candidates whose immorality could be judged as criminal acts are," he appealed.
He also said, "Among the superintendent candidates who should maintain political neutrality, please look with the eyes of the times to see who was the chairman of the Saenuri Party Gwangju City Party Committee, the predecessor of the People Power Party, and who served as the co-chairman of the Gwangju joint election countermeasures committee for presidential candidate Ahn Cheol-soo during the 17th presidential election," adding, "Please prevent the emergence of a conservative superintendent, a superintendent who goes against democracy and the times, in Gwangju, the sacred place of democracy."
