[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province has ended its "COVID-19 Safe Accommodation" program, which was the first of its kind nationwide, after 2 years and 2 months.
On the 25th, Suwon City announced that it had signed a business agreement with five local hotels in March 2020 and terminated the "Safe Accommodation" service on the 13th of this month, which allowed families residing in Suwon to use hotels at a discounted rate while overseas arrivals self-quarantined at home.
According to the city, a total of 1,139 people (685 households) used the safe accommodation over 778 days. The safe accommodation service also helped the lodging industry, which had seen a significant drop in sales following the COVID-19 outbreak.
The safe accommodation service spread nationwide after being publicized through the media. About 100 local governments inquired about the safe accommodation project to Suwon City, which actively shared the program.
On the 19th, the city held a meeting with hotel officials who participated in the safe accommodation program at the Suwon Convention Center and expressed its gratitude.
A city official said, "Thanks to the safe accommodation, we were able to proactively respond to the risk of local infections caused by overseas arrivals," adding, "We will leverage our experience operating the safe accommodation for over two years to actively respond to future infectious disease outbreaks."
