[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization announced on the 24th that they will operate the 'Travel Month' from the 2nd to the 30th of next month to meet the increasing travel demand following the phased recovery of daily life after the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year's 'Travel Month' is themed 'Regenerate through Travel,' aiming to restore daily life through domestic travel. More organizations than last year are participating, offering a wider variety of richer benefits such as discounts on KTX, flights, rental cars, and accommodations.
Significant discounts are provided in the transportation sector. When booking accommodations or purchasing combined local experience packages, KTX fares are discounted by up to 50%. Fares for five tourist train routes are also discounted by up to 50%, and the Naeilro Pass is discounted by 10,000 KRW. For air tickets, one-way routes arriving at regional airports receive discounts ranging from 15,000 to 21,000 KRW.
When using rental cars through Kamoa, a 10% discount is offered (30% in depopulated areas). Additionally, booking city tour buses in 12 local governments through KakaoT grants a 50% discount.
In the accommodation sector, regional discount coupons can be issued when booking accommodation products exceeding 70,000 KRW. From the 7th to the 9th of next month, special 50,000 KRW discount coupons will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis for use in Gangwon, Gyeonggi, Gyeongbuk, Daegu, Daejeon, Busan, Sejong, and Incheon. From the 10th of next month, 30,000 KRW accommodation discount coupons will be issued for use in all regions except Seoul.
Using nationally certified Korea Tourism Quality Certification accommodations offers discounts up to 50% (with a 50,000 KRW limit). Accommodation discount coupons are also issued exclusively for wildfire-affected areas such as Gangneung, Donghae, Samcheok, Yeongwol, and Uljin.
Various other discounts are prepared, including discounts on amusement facilities and camping site fees. However, all discount benefits will end once the allocated budget is exhausted.
During the 'Travel Month,' 36 regional travel programs will be operated. These include three themes: 'Mindfulness,' which heals the minds of modern people; 'My Own Travel,' tailored to individual travel preferences; and 'Regional Specialization,' utilizing special eco-friendly tourism resources of the regions. Applications can be submitted through the official 'Travel Month' website starting from the 24th.
From the 16th to the 30th of next month, the eco-friendly travel program 'Think Earth & Earth Campaign,' involving travelers and residents, will be held. The 'Seohaerang-gil,' a walking trail connecting the West Coast, will also open during the 'Travel Month.'
The event continues online as well. By uploading photos of travel memories with parents on the 'Travel Month' website, such as 'Parents and Travel Diary,' participants can enter a draw to receive gifts.
Kim Jangho, Director of Tourism Policy at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said, "We have prepared more benefits than usual so that citizens can heal their bodies and minds tired from COVID-19 through domestic travel," adding, "We hope this will help people normalize travel again." He also said, "However, since new COVID-19 cases are still occurring, it is advisable to follow basic personal quarantine rules such as hand washing and indoor ventilation to safely enjoy domestic travel."
