[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] On the 24th, Park Ju-min, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, demanded the People Power Party to "recommend witnesses for the public hearing on the Anti-Discrimination Act."
Park Ju-min, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Office on the same day and said, "Since last year, we have proposed holding a public hearing related to the Anti-Discrimination Act to the People Power Party. Nevertheless, refusing even a public hearing to hear the voices of the people, not even a bill review, is neglect of duty," adding, "Even today, the People Power Party should recommend witnesses for the Judiciary Committee Subcommittee No. 1 public hearing related to the Equality Act."
Park, the Democratic Party's secretary of the National Assembly Judiciary Committee, emphasized, "The public hearing is scheduled for tomorrow, but the opportunity and door to recommend witnesses are still open," and added, "Please recommend witnesses so that the diverse voices of the people can be discussed in the National Assembly and recorded."
On the 20th, the Democratic Party held the first subcommittee meeting of the National Assembly Judiciary Committee and unilaterally adopted the plan for the Anti-Discrimination Act public hearing. Members of the People Power Party, who opposed the decision by being absent from the meeting, expressed their opposition to holding such a public hearing.
Park pointed out, "I am well aware that some people have concerns about the enactment of the Equality Act," and said, "The People Power Party's refusal to recommend witnesses now is depriving those who oppose the bill of the opportunity to speak about it in the National Assembly."
He also added, "People Power Party members of the Judiciary Committee issued a statement criticizing that 'the Subcommittee No. 1 public hearing is a trick to skip the full committee public hearing,' but that is absolutely not true," and added, "Even after the Subcommittee No. 1 public hearing, a full committee public hearing can be held at any time."
