[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Lee Gyehwa] Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, appealed for support in the June 1 local elections and responded to Park Ji-hyun, co-chair of the Democratic Party's emergency committee, who apologized for the party's lack of reform, stating, "If the Democratic Party is to reflect, I believe the priority should be to correct candidate Lee Jae-myung's baseless candidacy."
After finishing a campaign event in Gwanak-gu, Seoul on the 24th, Lee told reporters, "Elections are essentially about competing over visions, and during this election process, the Democratic Party's vision has been overshadowed by candidate Lee Jae-myung's baseless candidacy," expressing this view.
Earlier that day, Park held an emergency press conference at the National Assembly and issued a public appeal. Park said, "While touring nationwide campaign sites, I received much encouragement but also many reproaches asking why we are not reflecting earnestly," adding, "I am truly ashamed and apologize. I will apologize a hundred, even a thousand times." She continued, "If you give us a chance in this local election, I will take responsibility and change the Democratic Party," appealing, "I will abandon politics that only cling to positions and pursue politics that align with the people and common sense. Please trust me, Park Ji-hyun."
Regarding his campaign in the streets of Gwanak-gu, Seoul, Lee said, "The reason I came to Gwanak for my first step today is to give strong support to our candidates who have been working hard in this challenging district of Seoul," adding, "For candidate Oh Se-hoon to smoothly carry out Seoul city administration, it is also important that district mayors and city council members across Seoul achieve good results. As we move into the latter half of the election, we will strengthen support for district mayors to back Oh Se-hoon's administration."
Lee also commented on former Minister of Health and Welfare nominee Jeong Ho-young, who tendered his resignation the previous night, saying, "Personally, I respect his significant decision." He added, "However, considering the ongoing COVID-19 situation, it is important to promptly appoint a new Minister of Health and Welfare to ensure the ministry's control tower functions properly. I hope the government quickly finds a successor to avoid any vacancy."
