Over 20,000 Water Meters Scheduled for Replacement by 2025
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yeo Jong-gu] Gyeongju City, Gyeongbuk Province, is switching to a continuous smart remote meter reading method using water meter Internet of Things (IoT) without direct human visits for meter reading.
From this year until 2025, Gyeongju City will replace about 20,000 water meters, accounting for 37% of the approximately 54,000 water meters in the region, with remote reading meters.
Currently, 28 water meter readers are active in Gyeongju, with an average of about 2,000 readings per person per month.
'Smart remote meter reading' is a method where digital water meters and remote reading terminals are installed, and meter readings are transmitted via the Internet of Things.
By changing to a non-face-to-face meter reading method, real-time usage monitoring becomes possible, enabling scientific water supply management and greatly helping to prevent losses caused by leaks.
Accordingly, the city plans to gradually switch from the monthly visit meter reading method to a continuous smart remote meter reading method.
First, by July, about 3,760 water meters in Cheonbuk-myeon, Seo-myeon, Naenam-myeon, and the Seongdong Market area will be replaced, with a project cost of 1.24 billion KRW including national and provincial subsidies.
Next, by the end of this year, all 3,400 water meters in Jinhyeon-dong and Jungang Market will be replaced.
A Gyeongju City official said, "Through the transition to remote reading meters, rapid response to water accidents such as leaks has become possible," and added, "We will continue to do our best to provide improved water administration services through project expansion."
