[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] Korean Air announced on the 24th that, considering the difficulties SkyPass members have faced in using their mileage due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, it will extend the validity period of mileage set to expire for the first time at the end of this year by one year until the end of 2023.
Korean Air has operated a system where mileage accumulated after July 1, 2008, expires after 10 years. According to this measure, the validity period of mileage accumulated between January 1 and December 31, 2012, which was scheduled to expire this year, will be extended by one year and will now expire on December 31, 2023. Additionally, mileage accumulated in 2010 and 2011, which had already been extended twice as of the end of 2022, will be further extended by six months and can be used until June 30, 2023. This mileage will be extended sequentially during June.
Korean Air is providing real-time seat reservation status on its website to enhance convenience in using bonus tickets. The mileage hybrid payment service "Cash and Miles," which allows customers to pay 20% of the fare with mileage when purchasing regular tickets, has been receiving great response from customers, with the number of uses and reuse rates steadily increasing alongside the expansion of international flights.
Korean Air SkyPass mileage can be used not only for bonus tickets but also for services such as ▲airport lounges ▲excess baggage ▲hotel stays ▲travel products ▲KAL Store products (logo merchandise).
Meanwhile, Korean Air is diversifying products to increase opportunities to use mileage. Through the KAL Store, new products such as ready bags and office supplies, which can be purchased with small amounts of mileage, are continuously being introduced. The range of choices is being expanded through new mileage partnerships that allow easy use in everyday life, such as ▲Naver Plus Membership ▲Emart discounts. Starting in June, the scope will be expanded to allow the use of Jin Air flights with domestic bonus tickets.
