[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, has been sued by the Washington DC prosecutor's office, according to reports by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and others on the 23rd (local time).

Karl Racine, the Attorney General of Washington DC, filed a lawsuit on the same day, alleging that CEO Zuckerberg played a role in the 'Cambridge Analytica scandal,' a case involving the leakage of Facebook users' personal information. The Cambridge Analytica scandal was a large-scale personal data breach incident in which data from 87 million Facebook users was collected without their consent and used for political advertising during the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Attorney General Racine claimed in the lawsuit that Zuckerberg was deeply involved in establishing and executing the framework that allowed Cambridge Analytica to collect users' data without consent.

He emphasized, "This unprecedented security breach exposed the personal information of tens of millions of Americans, and due to Zuckerberg's policies, there were years of activities that misled users about the scope of Facebook's illegal actions. This lawsuit is not only justified but necessary, sending a message that corporate leaders, including the CEO, will be held accountable for their actions."

Meanwhile, earlier, the Washington DC prosecutor's office requested the court to add CEO Zuckerberg as a defendant in the Cambridge Analytica lawsuit. However, the court dismissed the request.
