[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] Amid the declining trend in the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases, the count increased again to the 20,000 range in just one day.
According to Seoul City and other local governments on the 23rd, from 12 a.m. to 9 p.m. nationwide across 17 cities and provinces, the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases was recorded at 25,432. This is an increase of 15,776 cases compared to the same time the previous day (9,656 cases).
Recently, the number of confirmed cases had been decreasing. From the 18th to the 20th, cases were in the 20,000 range, on the 21st in the 10,000 range, and the previous day in the 9,000 range. However, it is estimated that the number rose back to the 20,000 range immediately after escaping the weekend effect.
The quarantine authorities analyzed that the reason for the new confirmed cases falling below 10,000 was due to a clear decline in the epidemic and a sharp drop in testing volume over the weekend. It is expected that the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases will continue to decrease but will plateau at a certain point.
As of 9 p.m. on the day, the number of new confirmed cases was 11,123 (43.7%) in the metropolitan area and 14,309 (56.3%) in non-metropolitan areas. By region, the numbers are: Gyeonggi 5,829, Seoul 4,272, Daegu 2,034, Gyeongnam 1,829, Gyeongbuk 1,668, Gangwon 1,065, Jeonbuk 1,061, Chungnam 1,058, Incheon 1,022, Busan 989, Jeonnam 922, Daejeon 908, Chungbuk 904, Ulsan 753, Gwangju 590, Sejong 275, Jeju 253.
From the 17th to the recent week, the daily new confirmed cases were 35,104 → 31,342 → 28,124 → 25,125 → 23,462 → 19,298 → 9,975, averaging about 24,632 cases per day.
