Jeonnam Fire Department Conducts 'Special Inspection' of Large Livestock Facilities in the Province

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Jeonnam Fire Headquarters announced on the 23rd that it will conduct a special fire inspection of large-scale livestock facilities in the province for one month from the 2nd to the 30th of next month.

Recently, the risk of fire is expected to increase due to livestock barn fires and the surge in use of cooling and ventilation fans in livestock facilities during the heatwave season.

In fact, in the early morning of the 18th of last month, a fire broke out at a pig barn in Bulgap-myeon, Yeonggwang-gun, killing about 18,000 pigs and spreading to a nearby mountain, destroying 2.5 hectares of forest.

Accordingly, Jeonnam Fire Headquarters decided to conduct a special inspection for intensive preventive activities.

The inspection targets 76 large-scale livestock barns equipped with fire facilities such as automatic fire detection systems (25 cattle barns, 40 pig barns, 8 chicken coops, and 3 others), with special inspection teams from the headquarters and fire stations deployed.

The main inspection and guidance contents include ▲checking the maintenance and management status of fire facilities ▲whether there is any violation of storage and handling standards for special combustible materials such as rice straw ▲removal of fire risk factors in the surrounding environment such as accumulation or abandonment of other combustible materials ▲and promoting fire safety consulting for livestock facility personnel on initial fire response methods.

A Jeonnam Fire Headquarters official said, “Livestock facilities mostly have structures vulnerable to fire, so fire spreads rapidly when it occurs. To prevent fires, it is very important for related personnel to change their awareness of fire safety and learn how to respond to fires in the early stages.”

Meanwhile, in the past three years, 158 livestock barn fires have occurred in Jeonnam, resulting in 5 casualties and property damage worth 8.8 billion won. By cause, electrical factors accounted for 48.1% (76 cases) and negligence 31% (49 cases), making up more than half of the fires.
