[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Hyung-gil] Hanwha TotalEnergies announced on the 23rd that its synthetic resin and petrochemical raw material products have obtained the international eco-friendly product certification (ISCC PLUS).
ISCC PLUS is an international certification system that verifies the use of eco-friendly raw materials throughout the entire product manufacturing process. Over 130 refining and chemical companies and raw material manufacturers worldwide are members.
The products certified this time include five types of synthetic resin, butadiene, and styrene monomer. Hanwha Total expects that this certification will bring carbon emission reduction effects to its customers who are expanding the production of eco-friendly low-carbon products such as clothing and home appliances using synthetic resin products.
Additionally, the company plans to introduce bio-naphtha and pyrolysis oil-based naphtha from waste plastics as alternative raw materials instead of conventional fossil fuel-based naphtha.
Bio-naphtha produced from soybean oil, palm oil, and waste cooking oil is more than three times more expensive than conventional fossil fuel-based naphtha but is gaining attention as a next-generation eco-friendly raw material. Pyrolysis oil naphtha is a product refined into naphtha after removing impurities from pyrolysis oil made by heating waste plastics for use in petrochemical processes.
Hanwha Total plans to start process testing and pilot production by introducing eco-friendly naphtha from next month and to expand the discovery of demand sources for low-carbon plastic products in the future.
A Hanwha Total official stated, "We have secured the eco-friendly competitiveness of low-carbon plastic products produced from raw materials recycled from waste plastics," and added, "We expect to strengthen ESG competitiveness in the plastic market where demand for eco-friendly products is increasing."
