CJ ENM Distributor's First Time with 2 Films in Competition

[Cannes (France) = Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] Miky Lee, Vice Chairwoman of CJ Group, is returning to Cannes after three years to support Korean films. This is according to a film industry insider met near the Palais des Festivals, where the 75th Cannes Film Festival is being held on the 20th (local time). Vice Chairwoman Lee, who has recently been busy with overseas schedules, is visiting Cannes, France.

This year, CJ ENM achieved the remarkable feat of having two films invited to the competition section of the Cannes Film Festival, the first domestic distributor to do so. Vice Chairwoman Lee previously went to Cannes after 10 years to support the official screening of "Parasite" (director Bong Joon-ho), which won the Palme d'Or in 2019. She has now decided to return to Cannes after three years.

Park Chan-wook’s "Decision to Leave" and Hirokazu Kore-eda’s "Broker," both invested and distributed by CJ ENM, have entered this year’s competition section. "Decision to Leave" stars Tang Wei and Park Hae-il, while "Broker" features Song Kang-ho, Gang Dong-won, and IU.

The Cannes Film Festival typically displays posters of its main invited films at the main entrance or on the exterior walls of luxury hotels to enhance the atmosphere. This year, posters for "Decision to Leave" and "Broker" are prominently visible in various locations. Many Korean film industry professionals who have covered Cannes for a long time are expressing optimism that Korean films might win awards at this year’s closing ceremony. Expectations are growing that Korean cinema may once again take home the Palme d'Or.
