[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Junho] Ahead of the local elections on June 1, a man in his 20s was caught by the police for tearing down banners of People Power Party candidates in Gwangju.
The Gwangju Bukbu Police Station announced on the 20th that they have detained and are investigating Mr. A on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act.
Mr. A is accused of damaging banners of People Power Party candidates hanging at the back gate of Chonnam National University around 4:30 a.m. on the 19th.
The damaged banners were known to be those of Joo Ki-hwan, the People Power Party candidate for Gwangju mayor, and Kwak Seung-yong, the candidate for the Buk-gu District Council in electoral district La.
According to the investigation, Mr. A, who had been drinking and was riding a bicycle home, committed the act using a bicycle key because the banners were obstructing his way.
Mr. A reportedly admitted to all charges during the police investigation.
The police stated, "Additional reports of banner damage have been received and are under investigation. However, since the locations and times of the damage differ, it appears not to be the work of the same perpetrator."
