[Asia Economy Reporter Kum Boryeong] Ahead of the June 1 local elections, the People Power Party focused on targeting difficult districts on the 20th.
Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, went to Gwangju that day to support the Honam election. It was two days after his visit to Gwangju on the 18th.
In Gwangju, Lee participated in re-hanging banners for Joo Ki-hwan, candidate for Gwangju mayor, and Kwak Seung-yong, candidate for Gwangju Buk-gu council. The banners of the two candidates put up the previous day in Gwangju were damaged immediately after being hung.
At a meeting with reporters that day, Lee said, "I was very heartbroken to hear that there were signs that our candidates' banners in the Gwangju area were deliberately damaged early yesterday morning," adding, "Our party came down by express bus at midnight to show that we will not be discouraged by such acts and will continue to challenge Honam, especially Gwangju."
He continued, "We will remove the damaged banners and hang new ones to show that our determination remains unchanged, becoming a People Power Party that demonstrates this."
Lee then planned to move to Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, and Gyeyang, Incheon. Gyeonggi is recognized by the People Power Party as a place that must be reclaimed, as it gave more votes to the Democratic Party in the last presidential election. Gyeyang, Incheon, is the district where candidate Lee Jae-myung is running in the by-election for the National Assembly.
The Central Election Committee also moved to the Gyeonggi area to lend support. At the on-site meeting of the Central Election Committee held at KINTEX in Goyang, Gyeonggi, floor leader Kwon Seong-dong emphasized, "Gyeonggi Province is the biggest battleground in this local election," adding, "Winning in Gyeonggi means a real victory and can be seen as the completion of a genuine regime change."
Along with this, Floor Leader Kwon also strongly criticized the Democratic Party. He said, "Over the past four years, the Democratic Party has controlled both central and local power. Despite having absolute power, they have achieved little for Gyeonggi Province," and added, "Putting aside incompetence, they showed typical corrupt politics. The Daejang-dong and Baekhyeon-dong gates, embezzlement of Gyeonggi Province corporate cards, allegations of fund misappropriation in Seongnam FC, and other suspicions of corruption and irregularities have been endless."
