Innovative Attempts at Various Work Styles Centered on Remote and Flexible Work
Also Impacting the Acquisition of Top Talent
Startups advocating innovation in various fields are changing the way they work. The forms vary widely, from companies implementing full-day remote work regardless of external factors such as COVID-19 without any office space, to companies that have eliminated the concept of legal working hours. The focus is on enabling employees to work efficiently in a more creative environment without spatial or temporal constraints. This is also a strategy to boost employee morale and secure top talent amid growing preferences for autonomous work environments.
According to industry sources on the 20th, the edutech startup StudyPie operates with 100% full-day remote work for all employees without a separate office space. Currently, there are 26 members, and there are no restrictions on work location or distance; the employee working farthest away is based in Seattle, USA. To this end, StudyPie optimized its internal culture and work processes for remote work from the early stages of its founding. A StudyPie representative said, "We believed that energy spent on commuting could be better used for work, and that it would be more efficient for like-minded talents to work together."
The talent recruitment management solution startup Doodlin removed the time constraints of legal working hours. Employees can leave freely even if they do not complete eight hours a day, as long as they work from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. As an operator of a talent management platform, the company repeatedly considered creating a system to boost internal morale. Lee Taegyu, CEO of Doodlin, explained, "This comes from trusting autonomy and responsibility rather than viewing employees as objects of control or management. We thought this approach aligns well with how Doodlin treats its talent, so we adopted it."
The shopping mall solution company I'mweb provides support even when employees are not working. They believe that properly resting during vacation is as important as working hours. Accordingly, they provide an annual leave support fund of 100,000 KRW for each day of annual leave. Annual leave can be used freely without approval. I'mweb explained that this is to enable employees to enjoy a content-rich vacation.
The travel platform startup MyRealTrip has been implementing remote and flexible work since its founding before COVID-19. Their experience managing this and recent changes in corporate work styles became the background for MyRealTrip to officially launch its 'workation' business this year. Additionally, the logistics platform startup Fasto recently conducted new hiring for about 200 people and decided to provide individual equipment support funds for remote work. They removed restrictions on work location and allow flexible commuting hours between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.
An industry insider said, "Several startups on a growth trajectory are attempting various innovations in work styles centered on remote and flexible work. Work systems focused on efficiency also affect securing top talent, which is crucial for growing startups, so this trend is expected to continue."
