Seongnam-si, Measures for Flood, Wind Damage, and Heatwave Preparedness

Seongnam-si, Measures for Flood, Wind Damage, and Heatwave Preparedness

[Asia Economy (Seongnam) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province has prepared countermeasures against summer typhoons, heavy rains, and heatwaves, and began implementation from the 20th.

Seongnam City announced that when a typhoon or heavy rain advisory is issued, it will establish a Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters and enter an emergency duty system in three stages.

First, at Stage 1 preliminary advisory, 6 public officials will be deployed; at Stage 2 advisory, 208 officials; and at Stage 3 warning, 543 officials will be dispatched to the headquarters and field sites to manage safety at 41 locations designated as areas at risk of casualties, including under the Yeosu Bridge.

The disaster early warning system installed at 92 locations, including 14 automatic voice notification systems in Tancheon Stream, will also be activated.

Previously, the city stocked 278 pumps at 50 administrative welfare centers in Sujeong, Jungwon, and Bundang District Offices to prepare for flood damage.

The city is also promoting heatwave countermeasures. Until September 30, 244 indoor heat relief shelters will be designated and operated. The designation status includes 97 single-family home senior centers, 50 administrative welfare centers, 96 financial institutions, and Jungwon District Office (3rd and 5th floors), among others.

Heat prevention shade tents will be installed at 504 locations such as crosswalks. When a heatwave advisory with a perceived temperature of 33 degrees Celsius or higher is issued, 12 water spraying trucks will be deployed on 46 major road routes covering 225 km to spray water on the roads.

If the heatwave intensity reaches 35 degrees Celsius or higher and lasts for more than two days, additional fine dust reduction water trucks and construction site water trucks will be deployed.

The city plans to provide four one-day usage coupons for jjimjilbangs to 2,100 disaster-vulnerable people selected due to lack of cooling facilities, including elderly living alone aged 65 or older, low-income households, and basic livelihood security recipients (usage period: June 1 to September 30).

The beneficiaries can use 10 jjimjilbangs designated as 24-hour disaster safety shelters, including three in Sujeong District, three in Jungwon District, and four in Bundang District, which have agreements with the city.

Additionally, the city will distribute relief supplies such as cold water and cool scarves to an estimated 53 homeless people on the streets and guide them to use the Homeless Comprehensive Support Center (towards Moran Station Exit 7) as a heat relief shelter.
