‘Maeumieum Flower Arrangement Volunteer Group’ Providing Emotional Support Activities for Elderly Living Alone in the Community
Wishing for Seniors' Health with Unique Gifts Like Dementia Prevention Puzzles
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] The Posco Gwangyang Steelworks Maeumieum Flower Arrangement Volunteer Group (Leader Hong Jong-in) gifted a happy day to elderly people living alone who celebrated their birthdays on the 18th and 19th.
The Maeumieum Flower Arrangement Volunteer Group is a talent volunteer group that supports various activities for the emotional stability of elderly people living alone who are experiencing social isolation due to COVID-19 and other reasons. Since 2017, they have been warmly accompanying local elderly residents.
The members personally visited the homes of three elderly people who had birthdays this month, prepared birthday tables, delivered congratulatory greetings and gifts, and spent joyful time together. They also carefully checked on the elders’ well-being and did not forget to keep them company.
In particular, they attracted attention by giving unique gifts such as puzzles that are good for dementia prevention and cosmetics for summer skin protection to help the elderly stay healthy.
One elder who received the birthday table that day said, “It has been three years since I moved here from another region, and I often felt lonely because I had no friends around,” adding, “I am very grateful to the volunteers who came to celebrate my birthday with cake and gifts. It was nice to talk with many people after a long time.”
Hong Jong-in, who newly leads the Maeumieum Flower Arrangement Volunteer Group from this year, said, “Whenever we visit the elders, they warmly welcome us and often express their thanks and gratitude, but rather, we volunteers feel even more grateful and thankful to the elders,” adding, “We will continue to maintain the precious relationships formed through volunteering.”
