CJ ENM Co-produced Musical 'MJ' Nominated for 10 Categories at the Tony Awards

The musical 'MJ,' co-produced by CJ ENM, was nominated for ten categories at the Tony Awards on the 19th (Korean time). These categories include Best Musical, Best Direction, Best Book, Best Leading Actor, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design, Best Choreography, and Best Orchestrations. The Tony Awards are the most prestigious awards in the American theater industry. Since 1947, they have evaluated plays and musicals performed on Broadway. This year's ceremony will be held on July 12th at Radio City Music Hall in New York. The Tony Awards are named after Antoinette Perry (1888?1946), a director who contributed greatly to Broadway.

'MJ' is a work depicting the music and life of the legendary singer Michael Jackson. The script was written by Lynn Nottage, who has won the Pulitzer Prize twice for 'Ruined' (2009) and 'Sweat' (2017). Direction and choreography were handled by Christopher Wheeldon, a former choreographer of the New York City Ballet. A talented production team, including Tony Award winners Derek McLane (scenic design), Paul Tazewell (costume design), and Natasha Katz (lighting), participated, generating high expectations even before the premiere. CJ ENM participated as a co-producer.

The chances of winning seem quite high. At the Outer Critics Circle Awards, considered a precursor to the Tony Awards, 'MJ' was nominated in seven categories including Best Play, Best Direction, and Best Leading Actor. It also earned three nominations at the Drama League Awards and seven nominations at the Drama Desk Awards, proving its strong reputation.
