"2 Million Won Gucci·Adidas Collaboration Umbrella Fails to Be Waterproof"

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] A 2 million won umbrella released through a collaboration between luxury brand Gucci and sports brand Adidas is causing controversy in China. Despite its high price, it is said to leak rainwater because it is not waterproof.

On the 18th (local time), Bloomberg reported that a post on Chinese social media Weibo saying "Caution! This umbrella is not waterproof" along with photos of the umbrella is spreading widely. The post has recorded over 140 million views.

The selling price of the umbrella is 11,100 yuan (about 2.08 million won). Although the product was sold as an umbrella in China, there is also a spreading claim that it was originally intended to be used as a parasol to block ultraviolet rays.

Since last year, China has been strengthening its surveillance on luxury brands under President Xi Jinping's "common prosperity" slogan. More broadly, there is also a boycott movement against Western brands like Adidas. One Weibo user cited Xi Jinping's "common prosperity" slogan, pointing out that such products are not meant for ordinary people.
