[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jeong] Major foreign media reported on the 18th that the Canadian government is pushing a law to ban the entry of about 1,000 Russians, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, his close aides, and military officials.
Marco Mendicino, Canada's Minister of Public Safety, stated in a press release on the same day, "Blocking the entry of close aides and key supporters of the Putin regime is one of the ways to hold Russia accountable for its unjustified invasion of Ukraine."
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Canada has taken the lead in imposing sanctions on Russia and supporting Ukraine.
Earlier this month, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, and promised to supply additional weapons and equipment.
Minister Mendicino said, "Without amending the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), it is impossible to ban the entry of sanctioned Russians into Canada," adding, "Through the amendment, the new law will apply to all sanctioned individuals and their families."
In response to these Canadian sanctions, Russia banned the entry of about 600 Canadian figures, including Prime Minister Trudeau and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, on the 28th of last month.
