'Digerati' Alternative Term Recommended as 'Digital Intellectual'

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended on the 18th that the term 'culture fit' be replaced with the Korean phrase 'jo-jik munhwa jeokhapseong' (organizational culture fit). Additionally, they suggested 'digital knowledge-in' as the Korean alternative to 'digerati,' a compound of digital and literati.

Culture fit refers to the compatibility between a company's organizational culture or its pursued direction and the prospective employee. It is mainly used during recruitment to consider harmony, communication, and rapport with existing members of the organization. At the new word meeting held on the 4th, the Ministry and the Institute reviewed the appropriateness and usability of meanings and decided on 'jo-jik munhwa jeokhapseong' as the replacement term. The selection also reflected survey results. In a public acceptance survey conducted from the 6th to the 12th with about 2,000 participants, 85% of respondents answered that it was appropriate. 76.4% agreed on the necessity of a Korean alternative. Digerati refers to a new knowledge class leading the information age. The appropriate Korean term selected was 'digital knowledge-in.'

The new word meeting is a committee that provides Korean alternatives easily understood by the general public before difficult foreign neologisms spread. Experts from various fields such as Korean language, foreign languages, education, publicity and publishing, information and communication, and media participate. The Ministry and the Institute plan to continuously promote the proactive use of these alternatives by government ministries and media outlets.
