[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] The Jung-gu Cultural Foundation Chungmu Art Center is hosting the second season of ‘Creative Musical Award NEXT,’ a platform to discover promising original musicals.
‘Creative Musical Award NEXT’ targets musicals with completed scripts and music that plan to be staged as purely original works. Individual writers and composers, as well as production companies and productions, can apply. However, only works that have performed fewer than 20 paid shows are eligible.
The three selected works through the judging process will be presented to the audience on October 29 at Chungmu Art Center’s Medium Theater Black. Each of the three selected works will receive 10 million KRW as development funds for preparing the reading performance. Separate from the development funds, all production costs for the reading performance will be fully supported by Chungmu Art Center.
The selected works will be performed as 60-minute reading performances (in a recital format), and the final winner will be chosen on the day of the performance through judging by the jury and the audience. Additionally, this year, apart from the three selected works, the jury will carefully select and present new original musical works reflecting experimental and creative spirit by university students majoring in musical theater. The final winner will receive support for a one-month rental of Chungmu Art Center’s Medium Theater Black in February 2023 and a development grant of 20 million KRW.
Chungmu Art Center Performance Business Team Leader Choi Myung-jun said, “Through ‘Creative Musical Award NEXT,’ we aim to support creators who face difficulties in distributing their works after showcases and to discover next-generation original musicals to lead the musical market.”
Individuals or groups wishing to participate can apply via email during the application period until the 24th. Detailed information is available on the Chungmu Art Center website.
