[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] Cho Tae-yong, Ambassador to the United States, is a diplomat-turned-politician well-versed in US-Korea and North Korean nuclear issues.
Born in Seoul, he graduated from Kyunggi High School and Seoul National University with a degree in Political Science, and entered public service in 1980 by passing the 14th Foreign Service Examination.
He served as Director of the North America Division 1 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters, Counselor of the North America Bureau, and Director of the North America Bureau, and in 2006, he was the chief negotiator for the defense cost-sharing talks with the US Forces Korea.
In 2004, as diplomatic work related to North Korean nuclear issues increased, he was appointed the inaugural head of the newly established North Korean Nuclear Diplomacy Planning Group at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in 2005, he served as the deputy chief delegate for the Six-Party Talks during the adoption of the September 19 Joint Statement.
From 2011, he served as Ambassador to Australia, and in May 2013, he was appointed Chief Delegate of the Six-Party Talks and Head of the Korea Peace Negotiation Headquarters, working to resume denuclearization talks with North Korea.
In 2014, he was appointed First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the following year, he served as First Deputy Director of the National Security Office and Secretary General of the National Security Council (NSC).
In 2020, he was elected as a proportional representative of the Future Korea Party to the 21st National Assembly. Based on his expertise, he served as a member of the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee and Intelligence Committee.
Last month, shortly after President Yoon Suk-yeol’s election, he visited the United States as part of the Korea-US Policy Consultation Delegation.
