Over 30 Rural Guidance Officers Participate in Pear Thinning Work
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Agricultural extension officers at the Agricultural Technology Center in Hampyeong-gun, Jeollanam-do, have launched an emergency labor assistance effort to help farms struggling with labor shortages as the main farming season begins.
According to the county on the 17th, more than 30 staff members from the Agricultural Technology Center visited the farm of Park Gisung, who requested help due to labor shortages, to carry out pear fruit thinning work.
The ‘pear fruit thinning’ work, essential for harvesting high-quality pears, is very important and indispensable as it directly affects not only the yield but also the income of the farm.
Park Gisung (58), who cultivates pear trees on a 17,000㎡ area in Baekho-ri, Daedong-myeon, Hampyeong-gun, said, “At the time when fruit thinning work had to be done, I was suffering from the double hardship of rising labor costs and severe labor shortages, so I asked the Agricultural Technology Center for help. I sincerely thank the agricultural extension officers for willingly assisting us.”
Park Eunha, head of the Hampyeong-gun Agricultural Technology Center, stated, “To prevent fire blight disease, regular monitoring must be conducted from May to July, when the risk of infection is high, and any suspicious symptoms should be reported immediately to the Technology Center. We will continue to provide on-site consulting to ease the burdens of farms busy managing orchards.”
