[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 17th that it has secured an order for three liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers worth 862.3 billion KRW from a shipping company in the African region.

The vessels ordered this time are the latest specification LNG carriers equipped with membrane-type cargo tanks and gas engines. They are scheduled to be delivered sequentially by January 2026.

With this contract, Samsung Heavy Industries' order backlog for this year increased to 17 vessels, totaling 2.9 billion USD (approximately 3.7042 trillion KRW). This achieves 33% of the annual target of 8.8 billion USD (approximately 11.2402 trillion KRW). The orders include 8 LNG carriers and 9 container ships.

A Samsung Heavy Industries official stated, "It is significant that the volume of high value-added eco-friendly ships using LNG as fuel this year accounts for 71% of the total, with 12 vessels worth 2.2 billion USD (approximately 2.8101 trillion KRW)," adding, "We are actively pursuing orders for profitable ships to steadily increase our order backlog."
