[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] On the 16th, Kim Jin-pyo, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced, "I intend to run for the Speaker of the 21st National Assembly in the second half of the term to serve the people and the party one last time."
Kim made this announcement through a letter sent to members of the Democratic Party on the same day.
He said, "Although our Democratic Party unfortunately did not receive the people's choice in the last presidential election, I believe all members share the determination to rise again, become more competent, and stronger," adding, "It is the mission and destiny of our Democratic Party, the majority party in the National Assembly, to strongly check the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, which disregards the National Assembly and ruthlessly wields judicial power to push forward unilateral governance."
Kim stated, "If we demonstrate outstanding problem-solving abilities in the National Assembly and establish leadership that responds to the people, we will gain the love and trust of the public, win the general election in two years, and reclaim the administration in the next presidential election."
He pledged, "I will strengthen democratic control over the budget, an important means of government oversight," explaining, "By requiring preliminary reports to the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts and relevant standing committees at each stage of government budget formulation, and reflecting the National Assembly's will on the budget bill as much as possible, we will substantially enhance the National Assembly's constitutional right to review and approve the budget."
He also promised to strengthen parliament-centered public diplomacy. He said, "Rather than simple visit exchanges, the National Assembly will actively engage in diplomacy on domestic and international issues such as climate, environment, energy, and peace."
Kim said, "The blood of the Democratic Party flows through my veins," and added, "If given the opportunity to fulfill my final mission as a politician, I will devote all my efforts to restoring the National Assembly's trust from the people and making the Democratic Party its center."
The Democratic Party plans to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speakers on the 24th, and Kim announced his candidacy in the form of a letter. Previously, Jo Jeong-sik and Lee Sang-min held press conferences to announce their candidacies. Woo Sang-ho also announced his intention to run on the 17th.
