[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Tae-min] On the 16th, Won Hee-ryong, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, announced plans to expand metropolitan buses and double-decker electric metropolitan buses as a solution to the heavy commuting traffic congestion experienced by many in the Seoul metropolitan area. He also promised to promote policies such as the undergrounding of the Gyeongbu Expressway and the Seoul Metropolitan Area Express Railway (GTX), which were part of his election pledges, in the mid to long term.

At a YouTube inauguration ceremony held at the Government Sejong Complex on the same day, Minister Won responded to a question about measures to alleviate commuting traffic congestion in the metropolitan area by saying, “In the short term, we will prepare metropolitan buses and double-decker electric metropolitan buses.” He added, “In the mid to long term, we will steadily carry out policies pledged during the election, such as undergrounding the Gyeongbu Expressway, the Seoul Metropolitan Area Express Railway (GTX), and metropolitan railway construction, to create a 30-minute commuting era.”
