Former Paralympic Committee Chairman Goh Gwi-nam Passes Away Today


[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Jo] Former lawmaker Go Gwi-nam, who served as the chairman of the organizing committee for the 1988 Seoul Paralympic Games and the first chairman of the Korea Employment Promotion Agency for the Disabled, passed away due to old age at 1:40 a.m. on the 15th. He was 89 years old.


Born in Gangjin, Jeonnam, Go worked as the political chief and deputy editor of the Jeonnam Maeil Newspaper before joining the Democratic Republican Party in 1970, where he served as the head of the Jeonnam Provincial Office's publicity department. He succeeded as a member of the 10th National Assembly in 1979 and was elected as a member of the 11th National Assembly (nationwide constituency, Democratic Justice Party) in 1981 and the 12th National Assembly (Gwangju Dongbuk-gu, Democratic Justice Party) in 1985.


He served as the chairman of the support committee for the Gwangju branch of the Korea Disabled People's Association and helped establish the first welfare center for the disabled in Jeonnam. Due to this connection, he was appointed chairman of the organizing committee for the 1985 Seoul Paralympic Games and hosted the 8th Paralympic Games in 1988. He also served as the head of the Minjung Party's National Policy Research Institute (now Yeouido Research Institute) in 1987, the first chairman of the Korea Employment Promotion Agency for the Disabled (now Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled) from 1990 to 1992, and the president of the Labor-Management Cooperation Research Institute in 1999.
