Namwon City Kim Byung-jong Art Museum, 'Lacquer Woodcraft Exhibition' from the 17th

[Namwon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jeong Young-kwon] Jeonbuk Namwon City Kim Byung-jong Art Museum announced on the 13th that it will hold a special exhibition titled ‘Namwon City National Lacquered Woodcraft Competition Highlights’ from the 17th to August 28.

Marking its 25th anniversary this year, this exhibition commemorates the ‘Namwon City National Lacquered Woodcraft Competition’ by showcasing masterpieces that won awards of bronze or higher and belong to Namwon City from 2007 to 2021 to citizens and visitors.

Among them, visitors can see a total of 64 award-winning works, including the grand prize-winning piece from 2007, ‘Nakdong Technique Lacquered Tableware’ (Park Man-su), as well as various woodenware, soban (small tray tables), head chests, and document boxes.

These works are evaluated as reborn artworks that reflect modern designs based on traditional woodworking techniques, creating forms suitable for the times.

In addition to the unique aesthetics of the awardees, there are also works that reflect practicality, distinguishing them from conventional crafts.

Woodenware has long been an important specialty product of Namwon, supporting the local economy as a major industry; however, with the advent of industrial society, demand has decreased and the number of woodenware artisans is gradually declining.

A museum official said, “Namwon woodenware holds an important position in the local craft history, and the ‘Lacquered Woodcraft Competition’ reveals the current state of woodworking technology. It also serves as an important venue for artists to obtain information and exchange ideas, making this exhibition meaningful in many respects.”
