Suncheon-si Conducts Intensive Crackdown on Illegal Overnight Parking of Commercial Vehicles

Suncheon-si Conducts Intensive Crackdown on Illegal Overnight Parking of Commercial Vehicles

[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City in Jeollanam-do announced on the 13th that it has established a response plan to crack down on illegal overnight parking of commercial vehicles such as large freight trucks, passenger vehicles, and construction machinery along roadsides to ensure pedestrian safety and prevent traffic accidents.

Through continuous enforcement, the city issued 3,952 warnings and detected 47 violations last year, imposing one suspension of operation, fines of 2 million KRW on 26 cases, and transferring 20 cases to the relevant local governments.

This year, until the end of last month, the city issued 700 warnings and detected 13 violations, imposing fines of 300,000 KRW and transferring 8 cases, focusing more on guidance than enforcement considering the difficulties caused by COVID-19, striving to contribute to overcoming the crisis.

Additionally, in areas with a high volume of resident complaints and high risk of traffic accidents such as the alley between Geumdang and Songchon Apartments, Wangji Yusimcheon, in front of Ssangyong Driving School in Jorye-dong, Gangcheong Riverside Park in Seomyeon, and the retention basin parking lot in Ocheon-dong, the city has posted promotional banners to eradicate illegal overnight parking, encouraging parking within garages while combining guidance and enforcement to alleviate citizen inconvenience.

There are 7,514 registered construction machinery and commercial vehicles (freight and charter buses) in Suncheon City, and vehicles parked overnight along roadsides without using designated garages are subject to enforcement.

If a vehicle does not move within one hour after the first enforcement notice is attached, suspension of operation and fines will be imposed.

The city has organized two night enforcement teams that operate twice a week from midnight to 4 a.m., detecting vehicles parked for more than one hour and taking strong administrative actions to eradicate illegal overnight parking.

A Suncheon City official stated, “We will do our best to eradicate illegal overnight parking through continuous guidance and enforcement to prevent traffic accidents and traffic flow disruption caused by overnight parking of large vehicles,” and added, “We ask transport operators to actively cooperate by using designated garages to alleviate citizen inconvenience and prevent traffic accidents.”
