[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyun-joo] Teenage siblings who were tried for murdering their biological grandmother, who had cared for them for about 10 years, were sentenced to heavy penalties again in the appellate court. They had been living with their physically disabled grandparents since 2012.

On the 12th, the Criminal Division 1 of Daegu High Court (Chief Judge Jin Seong-cheol) announced that it dismissed both the defendant A (19) and the prosecution's appeals in the appellate trial for A's charge of murdering his grandmother with a weapon (parricide). The court also dismissed the prosecution's appeal against B (17), A's younger brother, who was charged with aiding and abetting the parricide.

In the first trial, A was sentenced to 12 years in prison as the long-term sentence and 7 years as the short-term sentence, while his younger brother B was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison with a 3-year probation. Only A and the prosecution appealed the verdict.

A was indicted for stabbing his biological grandmother dozens of times with a weapon on the morning of August 30 last year at their home in Seo-gu, Daegu, after becoming enraged by her nagging and scolding. He was also charged with attempting to kill his grandfather who was present at the scene but failed due to B's intervention.

B is accused of assisting the crime by closing the windows in advance to prevent the screams from escaping outside while his brother was killing their grandmother.

The court explained the reason for dismissal, stating, "Although the nature of the crime is very bad, considering that the defendants are high school students and have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, the original sentence is appropriate."
