[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon is challenging for a fourth term.
On the morning of the 12th, Mayor Oh registered as a candidate for Seoul mayor in the upcoming local election scheduled for the 1st of next month at the Seoul Election Commission in Jongno-gu. After registering as a candidate, he also announced his candidacy declaration at the redevelopment site of Guro-gu Gaebong 3 District.
In his declaration, he stated that he visited Gaebong 3 District in Guro-gu "to show my determination to continue walking alongside vulnerable groups and my commitment to resolving the severe housing issues."
He emphasized that this election is a choice between leaping into the future beyond the "lost decade" or retracing the footsteps of the past.
Mayor Oh said, "This election will be a choice between re-electing a competent worker to leap into the future or retracing the footsteps of the past with those who bear the original sin of the 'lost decade.'"
On the first day of candidate registration, Mayor Oh visited a reconstruction site and focused on promoting the achievements he has pursued so far. Regarding past real estate policies, he criticized that since 2015, no new redevelopment areas have been designated, and the annual supply of new housing, which used to be 50,000 units, has decreased to 22,000 units per year over the past decade.
He explained, "The broad real estate principle is to accelerate redevelopment and reconstruction to improve the residential environment. However, due to concerns that rising housing prices in some areas caused by redevelopment and reconstruction expectations might lead to instability, a slight speed adjustment has been implemented."
Meanwhile, Mayor Oh presented four major policies for vulnerable groups: △ Guaranteed Income △ Seoul-style High-Quality Rental Housing △ Seoul Run △ Public Medical Services. Targeting Song Young-gil, the Democratic Party candidate, he said, "I believe Seoul citizens will choose a candidate who does not see Seoul city administration as a refuge for personal political gain but one who has prepared solely for Seoul's future and will devote all efforts for Seoul and its citizens," appealing for support by saying, "Please help ensure that Seoul does not waste administrative capacity due to unnecessary conflicts and discord."
He added, "For the next four years, it is important not to turn off the engine of change that has been started," expressing his determination, "Having prepared well for Seoul's future over the past year, I will spare no effort to ensure proper results."
