Pohang City, "Taking from ships to consume themselves or distribute abnormally"
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The so-called ‘Dry Squid’ incident, which angered the public after some media reported on barefoot people stomping on squid on the 11th, has been revealed to be a deviant act that occurred not at a squid manufacturing company but at a foreign crew members’ dormitory.
On the 12th, Pohang City, Gyeongbuk Province, announced that it would urgently inspect the matter related to the ‘Dry Squid Incident’ articles and investigate the facts to alleviate public concerns.
The location mentioned in the related articles was confirmed to be a foreign crew members’ dormitory, not a company producing dried squid. The squid shown in the video was also brought by foreign crew members who dried it on their ship and were preparing it at the dormitory either for their own consumption or for some abnormal distribution.
Pohang City stated that there are 37 companies in the region producing dried squid, and drying and processing work for normal sales is carried out in hygienic facilities, not in dormitories.
Also, the squid spreading process is done hygienically and neatly using a small press machine, not by hand, to produce the final product.
A Pohang City official said, “The misunderstanding arose from a personal video of a foreign crew member, and the entire dried squid production industry should not be condemned as unhygienic because of this incident.”
Pohang City added, “Along with guidance and inspection of foreign crew members, we will thoroughly conduct hygiene guidance and inspections of production companies to supply safe and hygienic seafood to the public.”
