'Broker' Born from the Hands of the 'Parasite' and 'Squid Game' Production Team

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] The team behind 'Parasite' and 'Squid Game' has completed 'Broker,' a competition entry for the 75th Cannes Film Festival.

Hong Kyung-pyo, the cinematographer who worked on 'Parasite,' 'Burning,' 'The Wailing,' and now 'Broker' (directed by Koreeda Hirokazu), focused on using natural light in filming, capturing the emotions between characters by utilizing the boundaries between bright and dark light. Without artificial setups, he delicately captured every movement of nature?sunlight, raindrops, and wind?after long periods of waiting and observation.

Lee Mok-won, the art director known for 'Sweet Home,' 'Along with the Gods,' and 'Train to Busan,' created realistic spaces fitting the film’s mood across locations including Busan, Yeongdeok, Uljin, and Wolmido. He devoted great effort to bringing out the unique colors of each place. Details such as soccer ball marks on walls and stains on car seats were used to express not only simple everyday scenes but also the traces of time within each space.

Costume director Choi Se-yeon, who participated in 'Believer,' 'The Thieves,' and 'Mother,' breathed life into the characters with detailed costumes matching their stories and traits. Meanwhile, music director Jung Jae-il, known for 'Squid Game' and 'Parasite,' is expected to amplify the emotional resonance with his lyrical melodies.

The top production team in Chungmuro, from cinematography and art to costumes and music, united to complete 'Broker,' which depicts the unexpected journey of people connected through a baby box. The film stars Song Kang-ho, Gang Dong-won, and Bae Doona. It will be released on June 8.
