[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jung] The first Korea-Japan exchange event at the economic community level is being held since the launch of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration.
The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) announced on the 11th that it hosted a luncheon meeting at the 63 Building in Yeouido, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, inviting the Korea-Japan Parliamentarians' Union delegation visiting Korea to attend the inauguration ceremony of the 20th president.
Attending the event were National Assembly Vice Speaker Jeong Jin-seok, who served as the head of the Korea-Japan Policy Consultative Group, Assemblyman Kim Seok-ki, secretary-general of the Korea-Japan Parliamentarians' Union, Assemblyman Kim Han-jung, standing secretary-general, and other members of the Korea-Japan Parliamentarians' Union, along with economic representatives such as KCCI Chairman Chey Tae-won and SK SV Chairman Lee Hyung-hee.
From the Japanese side of the Korea-Japan Parliamentarians' Union, the Japan-Korea Parliamentarians' Union, the partner organization, was represented by Chairman Nukaga Fukushiro, Assemblyman Eto Seishiro (acting chairman), Assemblyman Takeda Ryota (secretary-general), Assemblyman Nakagawa Masaharu, and eight other members of the Japan-Korea Parliamentarians' Union, as well as ten current and former Japanese National Assembly members including Kawamura Takeo, chairman of the Japan-Korea Friendship Association (former assemblyman).
The attendees of the meeting engaged in in-depth discussions on ways to improve Korea-Japan relations and revitalize economic cooperation between the two countries. They shared know-how on the background and preparation process for the selection of the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo and exchanged opinions on strategies for attracting the 2030 Busan Expo.
Lee Sung-woo, head of the International Trade Division at KCCI, said, "Japan ranks fifth among our country's export destinations (based on 2021), but the proportion of exports to Japan (4.7%) is gradually decreasing," adding, "The new government needs to further expand economic exchanges with Japan." He continued, "We hope this event will be the first step toward improving and continuing cooperation in Korea-Japan relations, and KCCI will actively engage in private exchange cooperation with Japan through Korea-Japan chamber of commerce meetings at the economic community level."
