[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jeong] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) is strengthening its position as a leading builder of LNG carriers by introducing a system that monitors and controls the cargo tanks of liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers in real time.
On the 9th, DSME announced that it successfully completed the actual ship application of its self-developed smart technology, the "LNG Carrier Cargo Tank Environment Monitoring and Remote Control System."
The cargo tanks, considered the core of LNG carriers, are made of an alloy called INVAR, which is sensitive to temperature and humidity. Therefore, checking and inspecting temperature and humidity is one of the essential procedures for quality management to ensure the safe storage of LNG.
The system successfully applied by the company installs Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and communication equipment in the cargo tanks to detect temperature, humidity, and dew point, providing real-time cargo tank status to computers and mobile devices. Operators can check the data provided in real time and remotely and easily inspect and adjust temperature and humidity.
Previously, on-site workers had to manually check temperature and humidity by visiting ships scattered along the shipyard quay one by one. This method made it difficult to check measurements in real time and required workers to enter inside and outside the ship, raising safety concerns.
DSME evaluates that this system has laid the foundation to apply to all LNG carriers to be built at the shipyard and has also become a step closer to establishing a smart yard.
Park Sang-hwan, Executive Vice President and Head of Production at DSME, said, "With this success, we expect a significant improvement in production capacity, including simultaneous construction of LNG carriers. We will not stop here but continue development efforts to maintain our status as a leading LNG shipbuilder."
DSME plans to challenge fully unmanned automatic control using artificial intelligence (AI) in the future.
