[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Nayeon] As the worst drought continues in the western United States, the lowering water level of a lake has revealed a submerged corpse, prompting local police to launch an investigation. The body, estimated to have died 50 years ago, was found inside a drum.

On the 3rd (local time), according to the British Daily Mail and others, the Las Vegas police in Nevada, western United States, are investigating after discovering a drum containing a skull in Lake Mead near Las Vegas.

It was reported that on the 1st, citizens found the drum containing the corpse and reported it to the police. They reportedly looked inside the corroded drum, discovered the body, and then made the report.

Recently, the western United States has been experiencing a major drought for 20 years due to climate change. Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the U.S., is also recording its lowest water level since 1937.

Based on items found together in the drum, the investigation authorities estimate that the body is that of a man who died from a gunshot wound in the mid-1970s to early 1980s. Officer Ray Spencer of the Las Vegas Metro Police, in charge of the case, explained, "The body was wearing sneakers made in the mid to late 1970s."

Officer Spencer said, "We have begun the process of identifying the victim," adding, "Since DNA was not collected in the 70s and 80s, it may take years to identify the body." He further stated, "If the lake's water level had not dropped, the body would not have been discovered," and added, "If the water level drops further, it is highly likely that more bodies will be found."
