Gyeonggi Arts Center Memorial Performance for the Late Lee Ae-ju, 'Democratization Dancer'

Korean Traditional Dance Association and Gyeonggi-do Dance Company Take the Stage

Gyeonggi Arts Center Memorial Performance for the Late Lee Ae-ju, 'Democratization Dancer'

Gyeonggi Arts Center announced on the 4th that it will hold a memorial performance for the late Lee Ae-ju at the small theater on the 11th. The event is titled "The Spirit, Lineage, and Memory of Our Dance." Lee Ae-ju was a dancer who inherited the Seungmu dance tradition passed down from Han Seong-jun (1875?1941) and Han Young-sook (1920?1989). She became famous in June 1987 for presenting the solo dance "Barammaji" (Welcoming the Wind), which expressed the desire for democratization. That year, she led the funeral procession at the memorial service for martyr Lee Han-yeol, performing the "Hanpuri Dance." She also performed a shamanistic ritual in mourning clothes at the launch ceremony of the Democracy March. Later, she served as a holder of the National Intangible Cultural Property for Seungmu and concurrently as the chairperson of the Gyeonggi Arts Center. She passed away last May at the age of 74 after battling cancer. The Korean Traditional Dance Association, formed to practice and pass on Lee Ae-ju’s dances, will perform on this stage, presenting Salpuri, Taepyeong Dance, and Seungmu. The Gyeonggi Sinawi Orchestra and Gyeonggi Dance Company will also perform the vocal piece "Isudaeyeop" and "Je (祭)" respectively. Admission is free. For more details, please refer to the Gyeonggi Arts Center or Gyeonggi Dance Company websites.
