[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] Pukyong National University has been reselected as the representative center for the Yeongnam region, the 'Yeongnam Sea Grant Center,' to carry out the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' Marine Korea Development Program (Sea Grant).
Since being selected for the project in 2014, Pukyong National University has promoted initiatives such as developing oyster shell recycling technology, challenging high value-added new ark shell aquaculture, and obtaining international certification for regional specialties like Nakdong gim and Gijang miyeok.
With this project selection, the university will receive approximately 1.4 billion KRW in funding to operate the center until 2025.
The Pukyong National University Yeongnam Sea Grant Center conducts research projects and public support and professional manpower training to solve regional issues in areas such as fishing village and fisher welfare, coastal conservation and development, marine cultural tourism, and marine fisheries safety, aiming for the advancement of marine fisheries.
Center Director Lee In-cheol said, “We will actively utilize the excellent achievements and know-how of the Yeongnam Sea Grant Center to effectively solve regional marine fisheries issues and expand exchanges and cooperation with universities and institutions nationwide in the marine fisheries field.”
The Sea Grant program is a project that utilizes the research capabilities of regional universities to solve regional marine fisheries issues and foster local marine fisheries research personnel.
Universities have been selected for eight regions nationwide, including Yeongnam, Gyeonggi·Incheon, Gangwon, Chungcheong, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, Gyeongbuk, and Jeju.
