Samsung Electronics Wins Over 1 Trillion KRW 5G Communication Equipment Order in the US

Second Largest 5G Equipment Order in U.S. History

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-sun] Samsung Electronics has secured a 5G communication equipment contract worth over 1 trillion KRW in the United States. This is the second-largest 5G equipment order Samsung Electronics has received in the U.S. market.

On the 3rd, Samsung Electronics announced that it has been selected as the major 5G communication equipment supplier for DISH Network, the fourth largest mobile carrier in the U.S. Samsung Electronics plans to supply various communication equipment, including 5G virtualized base stations and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) base stations, as part of DISH Network’s nationwide 5G network deployment in the U.S.

Founded in 1980 as a satellite TV service company, DISH Network entered the mobile communication market in 2020 after securing frequency licenses for nationwide wireless communication services in the U.S. By adopting Samsung Electronics’ next-generation communication equipment such as 5G virtualized base stations, which have already been proven in the global mobile market, DISH Network is expected to rapidly build a stable nationwide network and actively compete to acquire subscribers.

By being selected as the major 5G communication equipment supplier for the newly emerging DISH Network in the U.S. mobile market, Samsung Electronics has expanded its market share in the world’s largest communication market and strengthened its position as a key supplier.

The 5G virtualized base stations Samsung Electronics supplies to DISH implement base station functions by installing software on general-purpose servers, supporting flexible and efficient network construction and operation. This is a next-generation technology.

Since successfully commercializing large-scale virtualized base stations in the U.S. for the first time in the industry in December 2020, Samsung Electronics has demonstrated excellent performance and differentiated commercial capabilities in global markets such as the UK and Japan. Samsung Electronics’ 5G virtualized base stations won two top awards at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2022 Global Mobile Awards in March: the 'CTO Choice' and the 'Best Mobile Innovation Technology Award.'

Samsung Electronics is leading key global 5G markets such as Korea, the U.S., and Japan, and is expanding its business into new markets including the UK, Canada, and New Zealand based on its large-scale network construction capabilities and next-generation mobile communication technologies. Samsung Electronics plans to continue targeting the global 5G market by leveraging its partnership with DISH.
